OpenPrivateer is a clean modern engine for the original Privateer experience. It reads the real game data and recreates the systems, interfaces, cutscenes, music, missions, bases and spaceflight behavior of the original game.

OPENPRIVATEER
A modern reimplementation of Wing Commander: Privateer, built around the original game data, authentic behavior, portability, modding and long-term preservation.

DEVELOPMENT
Next major objective: combat.
- Savegames can be loaded but not written yet.
- No full combat or damage system yet.
- No other ships in active spaceflight yet.
- Weapons cannot fire yet.
- Shields, missiles, ammo, homing, targeting, lock-on and tractor beam remain incomplete.
- No external ship views yet.
- Non-plot mission objectives are not fully tracked in flight.
- In-flight and Gameflow dialogues are not yet player-facing.
HD and widescreen support will come later and gradually evolve alongside the main development, while the original 320x200 experience remains the priority for now.
PUBLIC ACCESS
First downloads are planned for September.
PUBLIC ACCESS: LOCKED
Development is currently taking place in a private repository.
The first public builds are planned for the September development update.
No proprietary Origin/EA game data will be included.
A legally owned copy of Wing Commander: Privateer is required.
OPEN SYSTEMS
Extend and preserve.
OpenPrivateer includes a content override layer and translation system, with more modding hooks planned as the engine matures.
Reverse engineering findings are being turned into documented, maintainable engine behavior instead of remaining hidden inside one executable.
NOT YET ASSIGNED
OpenPrivateer Discord is coming.
A Discord server is planned for development updates, testing, feedback, modding, technical discussion and general Wing Commander chatter.
SUPPORTED PLATFORMS
Runs across modern systems.
OpenPrivateer is based on SDL3 and already builds natively for the three major desktop platforms. Windows, Linux and macOS are first-class targets from the start.
Windows
Native desktop builds for modern Windows systems.
SUPPORTEDLinux
Native Linux builds using the same SDL3-based engine.
SUPPORTEDmacOS
Native macOS builds alongside Windows and Linux.
SUPPORTEDSDL3 keeps the engine portable by design, leaving room for additional platforms in the future without making them a requirement for the first public releases.
FAQ
Before you launch.
Is OpenPrivateer a remake?
It is a modern reimplementation of the Privateer engine that uses the original game data.
Does it include the original assets?
No, OpenPrivateer does not distribute copyrighted game assets. You must provide the original game data from a copy you own.
Can I download it now?
Not yet. The first public downloads are planned for the September development update.
Will it support widescreen and HD?
Yes, but those features will develop gradually alongside the core game. Faithful 320x200 behavior remains the immediate priority.
Will there be modding support?
Yes. Content overrides and translation already exist (original PAK and IFF format), with broader modding capabilities (bases, planets, ships, etc.) planned over time.
What about multiplayer?
A technical concept for multiplayer setup exists but is not part of the implementation plan yet.
